Sanem Barn renovation
This architectural renovation in the Sanem commune of Luxembourg harmoniously bridges the historic character of a protected heritage site with contemporary living requirements, transforming a traditional barn and an adjacent residence into a cohesive residential ensemble. The project adheres to strict preservation mandates, maintaining the original building envelopes and facade proportions while subtly modernizing the materiality to reflect its local context. The primary structure features a refined sand-colored lime wash or textured render, anchored by original stone lintels and sills that define the rhythmic window placements typical of the region’s vernacular. This is seamlessly integrated with the barn conversion, which utilizes a paler, contrasting stucco to distinguish the volumes while respecting the historic hierarchy. The street-facing facade preserves its austere, dignified presence, marked by a slate-tiled mansard roof and integrated dormer windows that maximize interior volume without altering the protected silhouette. In contrast, the private rear elevation opens toward a sun-drenched courtyard, where the transition from heritage to modern living becomes more pronounced. Here, a minimalist glass conservatory and expansive, floor-to-ceiling glazing in the barn volume dissolve the threshold between the interior living spaces and the stone-paved terrace. The choice of charcoal-toned aluminum frames provides a crisp, industrial counterpoint to the organic warmth of the historic masonry. This dialogue between old and new is further grounded by a carefully curated landscape design, featuring tiered masonry planters and a central deciduous tree, ensuring the development remains a respectful addition to the architectural fabric of Sanem while offering a sophisticated, light-filled environment for modern habitation.
